Understanding Digital Enterprise: skills that open doors

A free, certificated training programme from Kafuti Trust. It gives refugees, people from Black and minority ethnic communities and low-income residents of Camden and Islington the digital and enterprise skills to find work, or to set up and run their own organisation.

Why this project

Built with the community, for the community

At Kafuti Trust's events and cultural exchange programmes, we asked people what would help them most. More than 30 people told us the same thing: they wanted practical skills that lead to a job, and a route into further learning.

Many face the cost-of-living crisis. Many refugees who have recently settled have had little chance to build up-to-date digital skills. This programme was designed around what they told us, building on an earlier pilot.

Who the programme is for

  • Refugees who have recently settled in the UK
  • People from Black and minority ethnic communities on low incomes
  • Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Adults with few formal skills or qualifications
  • Residents of Camden and Islington

Simko. R
Now employed as an administrator

"Before the course I had never used a spreadsheet or written a professional email. The sessions on administration and digital tools gave me the confidence to apply for jobs, and the certificate made my CV stand out. I now work as an office administrator, and I use what I learned every day."

2025 · founder of Africa Family Autism & Sickle Cell Support Group CIC

“I always wanted to do something for my community, but I didn’t know where to start. The course showed me how to plan a project, manage the money, promote it on social media and apply for funding. Today I run a community group that supports families in my area, and I have the confidence to keep it growing.”

S. Miguel
former participant, now a volunteer

“When I joined the course I was new to the UK and unsure of myself. The trainers and volunteers helped me so much that I wanted to give something back. Now I volunteer on the programme, helping new participants with computers and translating for people who are still learning English. Seeing them grow reminds me how far I have come.”

How we measure impact

Evaluation and learning

At the end of each year we evaluate the project using participant feedback and impact statements. We use what we learn to shape the next year, and we share the results with the community so more people can benefit.

What we track
